Spectra of some d2 and d8 transition metal ions

Abstract

The ultra-violet and visible spectra of 19 transition metal ions have been examined within the framework of j-j theory. For each ion the Racah parameters B and C, and the Trees correction and spin-orbit coupling constants were calculated. The agreement with experiment was very close, a typical deviation being about 14 cm–1. Some of the published assignments are questioned and some earlier suggestions are found to be in error.
