Molecular complexes. Part 9.—Studies by a phase distribution procedure which employs nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for quantitative measurements
Abstract
The equilibrium quotient for the reaction between acetone and benzene has been obtained from the distribution of acetone between two immiscible liquid phases. The reaction was studied in two ways using, in both cases, water as one phase and cyclohexane and carbon tetrachloride (with benzene) respectively as the other phase. In both studies it is shown that the equilibrium quotient depends upon the initial concentrations of the reacting species and that the values of the equilibrium quotient at a particular concentration differ in the two studies. An explanation is given for these observations.
