Photoelectron spectra of some methyl, silyl and germyl amines, phosphines and arsines

Abstract

The photoelectron spectra of (CH3)3N, (SiH3)3Z, (Z = N, P, As), (GeH3)3N, (GeH3)3P, (SiH3)2NCH3, SiH3N(CH3)2 and MH3PH2(M = C, Si, Ge) are described. In each spectrum the band at lowest ionization potential is assigned to the Z-p-orbital that has appreciable lone-pair character. The positions of these bands are consistent with some involvement of this “lone-pair” in bonding to d-orbitals of silicon or germanium.
