Heterogeneous decomposition of hydrazine on molybdenum films

Abstract

The heterogeneous decomposition of hydrazine, chemisorbed on molybdenum films at 195 K, has been studied in the temperature range 195–630 K. The results and general conclusions are qualitatively and quantitatively similar to those obtained with tungsten films, and the dual-plane theory previously proposed adequately explains the present results provided it is assumed that nitrogen is not dissociatively chemisorbed on the (110) plane of molybdenum as is the case for tungsten. It is also suggested that chemisorption of hydrogen on a nitrogen-presaturated film proceeds on the bare (110) plane, but not on the N-adatom-covered (110) planes. A procedure for the analysis of gaseous mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen by thermally evaporating nickel in the mixture is also described.
