Vibrational and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies of some complexes of platinum(II) and palladium(II) containing methylthio bridges

Abstract

Reactions of methanethiol with some halogen-bridged compounds M2X4(YMe3)2 and M2X2(YMe3)4(BF4)2(M = Pd or Pt, X = Cl or Br, and Y = P or As) are reported and 1H n.m.r., i.r. (below 800 cm–1) and Raman spectra of the products, M2X3SMe(YMe3)2, M2X2(SMe)2(YMe3)2, and Pt2(SMe)2(YMe3)4(BF4)2 discussed. The results demonstrate that the trans-influence of the methylthio-group is much greater than that of chloride or bromide. The significance of non-bonded ligand electrons on the effectiveness of metal–ligand bonding is discussed.
