Statistical factors and the symmetry of transition states

Abstract

The relative merits of statistical factors and symmetry numbers in transition state theory are discussed in relation to potential energy surfaces with valley bifurcations. Conditions for the applicability of the two methods are considered in terms of the details of the motion at the bifurcation, and some examples are discussed.
