Oxides and oxyions of the non-metals. Part XII. An electron spin resonance spectroscopic study of the chlorate anion centre in irradiated barium sulphate

Abstract

A radical prepared by the action of γ-rays on barium sulphate doped with perchlorate anions has been detected by e.s.r. spectroscopy. The principal values of the g-tensor are g11= 2·0020, g22= 2·0255, and g33= 2·0325, and those of the 35Cl hyperfine tensor are A11= 74·6, A22= 77·5, and A32= 71·7 G. The structure of the centre is discussed and by comparison with the radicals PF4, PCI4, SF4+, and AsO44–, it is concluded that this species is the isoelectronic ClO42– radical.
