Activation energies of the reversible reaction between hydrogen atoms and methane to give hydrogen and methyl radicals

Abstract

Experimental values of the velocity constants of the reversible system H + CH4= CH3+ H2 are critically examined. Corrections to published data are made where necessary, and values for the two velocity constants obtained. The ratio of the A-factors for the two reactions is compared with the ratio determined from entropy data. The best parameters for the velocity constants of the forward reaction are, A= 1·26 × 1011, E= 11·9, and of the backward reaction, A= 3·3 × 109 l. mole–1 sec.–1, E= 12·2 kcal. mole–1
