Adducts of Group III trihalides with trimethylamine and trimethylphosphine

Abstract

Vibrational spectra are reported for MX3,NMe3(M = Ga, Al; X = Cl, Br, I) and AlCl3,py. Cryoscopic molecular weights in benzene are given for all these trimethylamine adducts, except in the case of GaBr3,NMe3. The results show the presence of a four-co-ordinated monomeric species in all cases. The formation of AlCl3,2Me3P, GaCl3,Me3P, InCl3,2Me3P, and Inl3,2Me3P is shown to result from the interaction of the appropriate halide with excess of trimethylphosphine. The vibrational spectra of these species are closely comparable with those of the related trimethylamine adducts.
