The solution of zinc in fused zinc chloride

Abstract

The solubility of zinc in zinc chloride from 500 to 700° varied from 0·78 to 1·97 moles %, respectively. Rapid freezing of saturated melts gave a yellow glass containing a reduced zinc species which was stable at room temperature. Evidence that this species was Zn22+ was obtained from visible and ultraviolet spectroscopy on the fused and frozen melts, Raman, electron spin resonance, and magnetic susceptibility measurements and chemical studies. The extent of reduction was increased four times by the addition of 65 moles % of cerium chloride.
