Some anhydrous hexahalogeno-complexes of quadrivalent protactinium

Abstract

Hexachloroprotactinates(IV), R2PaCl6(R = Cs, NMe4, and NEt4) have been prepared by reaction of the tetrachloride with the appropriate cation chloride in concentrated hydrochloric acid (R = Cs) or methyl cyanide (R = NMe4 and NEt4). Analogous hexabromoprotactinates(IV), R2PaBr6(R = NMe4 and NEt4) and the hexaiodo-complex (Ph3MeAs)2PaI6 have also been prepared from the component halides in anhydrous methyl cyanide. Some chemical properties, infrared spectra, and X-ray powder diffraction results are reported for these compounds and compared with data for some analogous quadrivalent actinide complexes.
