Light-induced and related reactions of quinones. Part III. Light-induced reactions of some monosubstituted 1,4-benzoquinones
Abstract
The products from the irradiation of some 1,4-benzoquinones carrying reactive side-chains are described. Bicyclic phenolic compounds are formed when the side-chain is isopropenyl, but-3′-enyl, or benzloxymethyl, but the corresponding acylquinols result when it is 1′-hydroxyalkyl. Methoxymthyl-1,4-benzoquinone yields a polymer which can readily be degraded to gentisaldehyde.
