Facile synthesis of bio-fuel from glycerol over zinc aluminium phosphate nano plates

Abstract

The nano-plates of crystalline zinc aluminum phosphate exhibiting hexagonal and square planar morphology have been successfully synthesized by adopting a novel and simple synthesis method using single template TPABr in minute amounts with shorter synthesis time of 24h. The materials have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, SEM, XPS, TEM, thermal analysis and ammonia TPD. The synthesis temperature governed the morphology of the nano plates, but, irrespective to the shape of the nano plates, the materials exhibited promising catalytic activity towards the production of bio-fuel solketal (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol) a valuable bio-fuel from acetalization of bio-diesel waste glycerol at solvent-free reaction conditions.
