A metal–organic gel based on silver salt and 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole with high antibacterial activity and excellent dye adsorption performance

Abstract

A novel metal–organic gel (Ag(I)–AMTD-MOG) has been prepared using silver nitrate and 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole in some hydrous mixed solvents. This gel has been characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, EDX, XRD, SEM, TEM, etc. It exhibits thixotropic behavior and undergoes sol-to-gel transition with an increase in temperature. The sol–gel phase transition temperature (Tgel) is proportional to the Ag(I)/AMTD stoichiometry. It also shows fascinating gel-to-gel transformation when several metal salts were added to the gel, respectively. The gel displays high antibacterial activity against E. coli, B. subtilis and S. aureus, and its xerogel exhibits excellent dye adsorption performance. It could be a potential multifunctional agent for water purification treatment.
