Thermal decomposition of sulphenyl carboxylates

Abstract

Thermal decomposition of arenesulphenyl carboxylates in an inert medium gives the carboxylic acid anhydride, the acid, and products derived from the aryl arene S-sulphinate. A mechanism involving formation of an intermediate thiosulphonium salt, Ar[graphic omitted](SAr)O·COR RCO2, is proposed. Decomposition of 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulphenyl acetate in benzene gives 2,4-dinitrophenyl phenyl sulphide in good yield.
