This chapter gives a historical perspective to P-stereogenic compounds from the first examples to their success in enantioselective Rh-catalysed hydrogenation. It also contains a description of the configurational stability of P-stereogenic compounds against pyramidal inversion and an overview of the interconversions between phosphines and their immediate precursors.
