This introduction provides a perspective on sustainable manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry. The factors leading to issuing of an Innovative Medicines Initiative call are outlined and the specific challenges described. The resulting successful proposal was the CHEM21 consortium and an introduction to activities is provided.
