Synthesis of alkyl iodides

Abstract

Hindered alkyl iodides may be prepared conveniently by treatment of the corresponding chlorides with sodium iodide in carbon disulphide in the presence of an inorganic catalyst, such as zinc chloride. The reactions appear to be dependent upon electrophilic catalysis, and in situ trapping of carbenium species by iodide ion.
