Organic compounds of multivalent iodine. Part II. Ultraviolet spectra of some iodo- and iodoxy-benzenes

Abstract

Ultraviolet spectra for aqueous solutions of a series of iodoxybenzenes and of the corresponding iodo-compounds have been measured. The spectra of those compounds carrying π-electron-repelling substituents are similar and electron transfer to the iodo- or iodoxy-group appears to contribute to the excited states of these compounds. Conversely the spectra of nitro-substituted derivatives show differences which are attributed to the difference in inductive effects of the iodo- and iodoxy-groups.
