Silicon–germanium hydrides, Si2GeH8 and SiGe2H8

Abstract

The action of a silent electric-discharge on silane–germane mixtures yields both the position isomers SiH3·SiH2·GeH3(I) and SiH3·GeH2·SiH3(II) but SiH3·GeH2·GeH3(III) is accompanied by only traces of GeH3·SiH2·GeH3(IV). Use of disilane yields (I) almost free from (II). The compounds were characterised by 1H n.m.r., Raman, i.r., and mass spectroscopic studies.
