Deuterium isotope effect in octahedral substitutions. Part IV. The hydrolyses of some fluoro-complexes in neutral, acidic, and basic solutions

Abstract

Fluoropenta-[2H3]amminecobalt(III) nitrate has been prepared and characterised, and the kinetics of its hydrolyses in neutral, acidic, and basic deuterium oxide solutions have been investigated. The deuterium isotope effect observed is compared, where possible, with that previously reported for the reactions of the corresponding chloro-complex. To determime the effect of changing the central metal, the kinetic study has been extended to the corresponding chromium(III) complex. In addition, trans-difluorobis(ethylenedi[2H2]amine)cobalt(III) nitrate has also been prepared and characterised, and similar kinetic investigations have been made. The resulting deuterium isotope effect does not differ significantly from that in the reactions of the bivalent fluoropenta-ammine system.
