Reactions of 8-quinolinol with covalent halides. Part III. Zirconium tetrafluoride and zirconium, hafnium and thorium tetrachlorides

Abstract

Reaction, at 20°, of 8-quinolinol (oxH)(1 or 2 mol.) with zirconium tetrafluoride (1 mol.) gave only the adduct ZrF4,oxH; but with zirconium and hafnium tetrachlorides (MCl4)(1 mol.) the adducts MCl4,2oxH were obtained. At 65°, or in a sealed tube, MCl4(1 mol.) and 8-quinolinol (8 mol.) gave the chelate compounds M ox4. Precipitates of overall composition ThCl4,noxH (n= 2, 3, 4, or 6) were formed in the reactions with thorium tetrachloride. The precipitate with n= 6 consists of 8-quinolinolium chloride (3 mol.) and the seven-co-ordinate thorium compound, ThCl ox3. This compound was also formed from Th ox4 and thorium tetrachloride.
