Alcoholates and alkoxides of ytterbium

Abstract

Ytterbium chloride forms alcoholates YbCl3,3ROH except with t-butyl alcohol, which forms YbCl3,1·5ButOH. The effect of heat on these complexes has been studied.

Ytterbium isopropoxide has been prepared in high yield from the chloride and sodium isopropoxide; its reaction with acetyl chloride and its use in synthesis of other ytterbium alkoxides is described.
