Reactions of cobalt(III) complexes. Part I. A possible mechanism for base hydrolysis and other reactions of cobalt(III) complexes
Abstract
A mechanism for base hydrolysis of cobalt(III) complexes, e.g., [Co en2AX]n++ OH–→[Co en2AOH]n++ X– is suggested, involving electron transfer from hydroxyl ion to cobalt(III). A similar general mechanism is suggested for reactions of other reducing anions with cobalt(III) complexes. Supporting evidence from the literature is presented. Some explanations of certain effects in cobalt chemistry are given, with comments on some anomalies in the comparative chemistry of cobalt, rhodium, and chromium.
