Eugenol bio-based epoxy thermosets: from cloves to applied materials
Abstract
The development of high-performance materials from renewable resources is of paramount importance in a sustainable development context. In this paper, a novel bio-based epoxy monomer derived from eugenol was prepared by treating phosphorus oxychloride with eugenol, followed by epoxidation with m-CPBA. The structure of the epoxy monomer was elucidated by NMR. After curing, the thermal and mechanical properties of the obtained thermoset were evaluated by DSC, TGA and DMA and compared with those of the commercial petroleum-based epoxy monomer DGEBA.
