Correlation between the dielectric solvent polarity parameter, β, and rate and equilibrium constants for various processes

Abstract

An analysis of the dependence of rate and equilibrium constants on solvent polarity is carried out in terms of a new classification of solvents, recently obtained on the basis of the correlation between the dielectric solvent polarity parameter, β, and Reichardt's solvent polarity parameter, ENT. The correlation between the rate and equilibrium constants for various chemical and physical processes and β is much more satisfactory if the analysis of solvent effect is made within an appropriate class of solvents, which confirms the usefulness of β as a new solvent polarity parameter.
