Anomalous electric polarisations of 1,4-benzoquinone and related compounds

Abstract

Submillimetre spectra of several p-quinones in a variety of solvents obtained by interferometric spectrometry are reported. The gas phase spectrum of p-benzoquinone has been recorded using the interferometric technique. Three methods of calculating atomic polarisations from absorption spectra are described and values determined using these methods are compared with dielectric data. The possible existence of complexes of the donor-acceptor type between p-benzoquinone and various solvents has been investigated.
