Dielectric properties of pure liquid N-methyl acetamide

Abstract

The dielectric absorption of pure liquid N-methyl acetamide has been studied. The permittivities and dielectric losses have been measured over the frequency range 450–2000 MHz and for the temperature range 31.0–50.0°C. A single relaxation time was observed at all temperatures studied and the values obtained were in the range (310–619)× 10–12 s, which are greater than expected for such molecules. A linear Arrhenius plot of the relaxation times gives an activation energy of 31.5 kJ mol–1.

The apparent dipole moment associated with this absorption was also calculated using the Onsager equation and values of 5.83–618 D were obtained.
