A new “Sn12” oxo-cluster—how to flatten the football

Abstract

Controlled hydrolysis of [(ClCH2CO2)3Sn(CH2)3Sn(O2CCH2Cl)3]n1 resulted in the hitherto unknown “Sn12” cluster {[Sn(CH2)3Sn]6(ClCH2CO2)14(OH)2O10} 3 with trimethylene “handles”: compound 3 has all twelve tin atoms nearly coplanar, in stark contrast to previously described “Sn12” clusters which have a spherical football structure.
