Synthesis and crystal structure of bis[σ-tricarbonyl(η5-cyclopentadienyl)manganese]di-η5-cyclopentadienyltitanium

Abstract

The reaction of Ti(η-C5H5)2Cl2 with Li[Mn(η-C5H4)(CO)3] in a mixture of tetrahydrofuran and diethyl ether (5 : 1) at –78 °C gives the compound Ti(η-C5H5)2[σ-(η-C5H4)Mn(CO)3]2, the structure of which has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Crystals are monoclinic, space group C2/c, a= 13.474, b= 8.085, c= 22.327 Å, β= 105.08°, and Z= 4. The structure, solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by least squares {R= 0.032 for 2 140 observed [Fo > 3σ(Fo)] data}, comprises molecules with C2 symmetry in which the Ti atom is σ bonded to the cyclopentadienyl rings of two Mn(η-C5H4)(CO)3 groups. Bond lengths and angles are as expected but with significant distortions in the manganese C5H4 rings.
