Ratios of quadrupole splittings: determination of quadrupole parameters for ruthenium-99 and tin-119

Abstract

Partial quadrupole splitting values from FeII low-spin compounds are used to obtain the sign of e2qQ* for nine RuII compounds; from the ratios of quadrupole splittings of RuII and FeII analogues, the 99Ru quadrupole moment, Q*, has been calculated to be |0·34|± 0·07 × 10–28 m2. The Ru quadrupole splittings and centre shifts for [Ru(NH3)5L]2+ compounds (L = N2, CO, or MeCN) indicate that N2 is relatively a poor σ donor but a moderate π acceptor.

By comparing 119Sn and 121Sb e2qQ values for isoelectronic and isostructural compounds, the quadrupole moment of 119Sn is calculated to be –0·062 ± 0·02 × 10–28 m2. The quadrupole splitting of the SnCl5 ion is deduced to be negative.
