New FeS clusters with NO: associative formation of [Fe5S4(NO)8] and [Fe7S6(NO)10], and larger clusters

Abstract

Solutions of [Fe2S2(NO)4]2− or [Fe4S3(NO)7] undergo facile aggregation to new clusters [Fe5S4(NO)8] and [Fe7S6(NO)10], but do not form the known species [Fe4S4-(NO)4]z and [Fe6S6(NO)6]2−; reactivities and reactions in solution and gas phases were monitored by electrospray Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, and the probable structures of [Fe5S4(NO)8] and [Fe7S6(NO)10] were determined by density functional calculations.
