Synthesis of (–)-ajmalicine from (–)-tryptophan

Abstract

(–)-Tryptophan has been converted into(–)-ajmalicine in 15 steps; the key step is an intramolecular Michael reaction in which the C(15)–C(20) bond is formed with full stereocontrol.
