Photosensitized anti-Markovnikov addition of methanol to homoconjugated aryl-olefins

Abstract

Photolysis of ethyl p-cyanobenzoate in the presence of 2-methylene-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,4-ethano-naphthalene (I) or 2-methylene-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene (II) leads to anti-Markovnikov addition of solvent (methanol) across the double bond.
