Mimic biomineralization matrix using bacterial cellulose hydrogel and egg white to prepare various morphologies of CaCO3

Abstract

An original bidirectional infiltration method exploiting the co-actions of bacterial cellulose hydrogel and egg-white proteins serves to simulate a natural biomineralization matrix. Different egg-white concentrations lead to various CaCO3 morphologies, which are determined by multiple factors, including diffusion rate, soluble organic matrix concentration, particle size, surface energy and crystalline composition.
