Spectrophotometric determination of Sunset Yellow in beverage after preconcentration by the cloud point extraction method

Abstract

Three different nonionic surfactant micelle-mediated extractions with Triton X-114, Triton X-100 and Brij 56 are a preconcentration step prior to spectrophotometric determination of Sunset Yellow in beverages. The relative operating parameters were studied in detail and the optimum conditions were established. Recoveries obtained from water samples ranged from 88.6% to 96.0%, and the limits of detection (LOD) for three surfactants were 10.4, 5.0 and 2.8 mg kg−1 while the relative standard deviations (R.S.D.) for 50 mg kg−1 of Sunset Yellow were 1.13%, 1.97% and 1.06% (n = 10), for Triton X-114, Triton X-100 and Brij 56, respectively, which were lower than most standards. In addition, the relative standard deviation (R.S.D) of the results determined by the method established using the three different nonionic surfactants could be less than 3% for the Sunset Yellow in 6 different beverages, which prove a significant applicable foreground. This method may be useful for the determination of Sunset Yellow.
