(Eco)toxicity of fluoro-organic and cyano-based ionic liquid anions

Abstract

The (eco)toxicity of the most common ionic liquid anions like [N(CN)2], [C(CN)3], [B(CN)4], [(CF3SO2)2N], [(C2F5)3PF3] was investigated in test systems of different trophic level. In the same order, and thus with increasing hydrophobicity, a trend of higher toxicity was found. Especially the [(C2F5)3PF3] moiety poses a significant hazard towards aquatic organisms.
