Synthesis and cathodoluminescence properties of CdSe/ZnO hierarchical nanostructures

Abstract

This report explores the controlled synthesis of ZnO branches on CdSe nanorod (NR) cores. ZnO nanohairs (NHs) grown on the hexagonal planes of CdSe NRs exhibit excellent stoichiometry between their constitute elements. After the growth of ZnO NH branches over the CdSe NRs a quantum confined (QC) cathodoluminescence (CL) UV peak is observed at ∼3.54 eV. From CL studies it is noticed that the dimensions and density of ZnO branches grown on CdSe NR cores have a strong influence on their emission properties. These observations suggest the potentiality of CdSe/ZnO hierarchical structures for future nanostructured optoelectronic device applications.
