An efficient and green method has been developed for the synthesis of tryptanthrin employing β-cyclodextrin as a catalyst in aqueous media at room temperature from isatoic anhydride and isatin. The reactions were performed under mild conditions to afford biologically active natural producttryptanthrin in excellent yields.
