4′-Phenyl-4,2′:6′,4′′-terpyridine (3) reacts with Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O in MeOH–CHCl₃ to produce [Cd(3)₂(ONO₂)₂·MeOH·CHCl₃]_n in high yield; two sets of undulating chains built up from trans-related ligands result in the formation of two-dimensional sheets, locked together by efficient π-stacking involving the phenyl substituents.
