The phytyl side chain of chlorophyll a derived from exogenous ¹³C- and ²H-labelled mevalonate in cultured cells of two species of liverworts, Heteroscyphus ptanus and Lophocolea heterophylla, is shown to be preferentially labelled in the farnesyl diphosphate-derived portion, while its biosynthesis from exogenous ¹³C-glycine results in equivalent labelling.
