Pressure–volume–temperature data and dielectric properties of liquid and solid 2,2-dimethylbutan-1-ol up to 300 MPa

Specific volume and dielectric data are reported for the liquid and solid phases of 2,2-dimethylbutan-1-ol up to pressures of 300 MPa. High values for the static permittivity, ε, are found for the liquid and the solid phases I and IV. ε increases on freezing, the largest change occurring at the liquid–solid I–solid IV triple point. The dielectric relaxation has been studied for frequencies up to 13 MHz. The loss curves are treated both with modified Debye theories and the Jonscher equation. The deviation from a single Debye relaxation is significant, but much less pronounced than for previously studied cyclic alcohols. The dielectric relaxation time, τ, increases on freezing and at the solid IV–solid I transition. The temperature and pressure dependences of τ enable evaluation of the activation enthalpies and volumes which agree approximately with those of other solid alcohols.
