The RuII(OH2)–RuIV(O) couple in a ruthenium complex of 2-(phenylazo)pyridine : homogeneous catalysis of the oxidation of water to dioxygen

Abstract

In acidic solution [RuII(OH2)(py)L2]2+ can be oxidised to [RuIV(O)(py) L2]2+ in a single reversible step (E°298= 1.20V) and the oxidised complex catalyses the dehydorgenation of water to dioxygen in the presence of Ce4+[py = pyridine; L = 2-(phenylazo)pyridine].
