Metal carbonyl chemistry. Part 28. Reactions of decacarbonyldimanganese with trimethylolpropane phosphite

Abstract

Thermal reactions of [Mn2(CO)10] with the sterically constrained ligand P(OCH2)3CEt (L) produce the complexes [Mn2(CO)9L], [Mn2(CO)8L2], [Mn2(CO)7L3], and [Mn2(CO)6L4]. The last compound can also be prepared from either [Mn2(CO)8L2] or [Mn2(CO)7L3] by reaction with L in the appropriate stoicheiometric quantities. All four substitution products are mixtures of isomers arising from substitution in both the axial and equatorial positions. The hydrides mer-trans-[MnH(CO)3L2], mer-[MnH(CO)2L3], and trans-[MnH(CO)2L3] have been obtained in low yield by heating [Mn2(CO)6L4] in xylene solvents. Infrared and 1H n.m.r. data for all the complexes are discussed.
