Abstract

The compound Ir(bipy)₃Cl₃·4H₂O which had been previously suggested to contain a unidentate bipy ligand has now been shown by ¹H n.m.r. spectroscopy to contain the covalently hydrated complex cation [Ir(bipy)₂(bipy·H₂O)]³⁺. The site of attack at the pyridyl ring is discussed, as is the synthesis of several related iridium(III) complexes.
