The salts [NR₄]_x[(CdX₃)_x](R = Prⁿ or longer n-alkyl; X = Cl, Br, or I) are shown by i.r. and Raman spectroscopy to contain the halide-bridged dimeric anions [Cd₂X₆]^2– both in the solid state and when dissolved in non-complexing solvents. Recent conclusions on the nature of the mixed-halide systems [NPrⁿ₄]_x[(CdX₂Y)_x] are shown to be questionable. Previous assignments for the anions [CdX₄]^2– have been augmented from studies on [NR₄]₂[CdX₄].
