The reactions of hydrazones and related compounds with strong bases. Part III. 1,2,4-Triazoles, 1,2,4-triazines, and 1,3,5-triazines from aromatic aldehyde azines

Abstract

The reactions of aromatic aldehyde azines in boiling toluene with potassium t-butoxide furnished 3,5-diaryl-1,2,4 triazoles (2), trisubstituted 1,2,4-triazoles (3), 3,5,6-triaryl-1,2,4-triazines (5), (6), and (8), 2,4,6-triaryl-1,3,5-triazines (9), 2,4,5-triarylimidazoles (10), 3,4,5-triarylpyrazoles (11), benzonitriles, and other products. Mechanisms were studied by identifying products from the ‘mixed’ azine (13b; R = H) and by 14C tracer methods. Application of the reaction to ketone azines (13; R = Ar) gave Wolff–Kishner products.
