Kinetics and mechanism of the decomposition of α-acetoxy-α-methoxytoluene in aqueous solution

Abstract

The rate-determining step in the hydrolysis of α-acetoxy-α-methoxytoluene in the pH range 3.69–6.27 is the decomposition of the intermediate benzaldehyde methyl hemiacetal which is general-acid and general-base catalysed.
