A number of samples of thorium tungstate have been synthesized. One of the most stable samples has been extensively studied and its formula has been postulated as Th(OH)₂(HWO₄)₂,nH₂O on the basis of chemical composition, pH-titrations, and i.r. spectroscopy.

Its utility has been demonstrated by determining the distribution coefficients of 26 metal ions. Separations of La^III from Ba^II, Sr^II, Ca^II, and Y^III, and of V^IV from Fe^III, Mn^II, and Cr^III have been achieved quantitatively on columns of this sample.
