Distribution of n-alkanoic acids between water and n-alkanes

Abstract

The distribution at 20°C of four n-alkanoic acids between water and each of three n-alkanes has been studied. The results are consistent with almost complete dimerization of the acids in the alkanes in the concentration ranges investigated. Distribution ratios have been used to calculate the standard free energies of transfer of the acids from water to alkanes. Measurements of the heats of solution of the acids in the alkanes have allowed estimates to be made of the standard heats and entropies of transfer. The results are compared with those previously obtained for the transfer of n-alkanols.
